Murphy on the Strategic Production Response Act: “The days of Democrat attacks on American energy are over”

January 27, 2023

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) released a statement following today’s vote to pass the Strategic Production Response Act, which passed the House 221-205.

“Thanks to President Biden’s politically motivated use of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), it currently sits at its lowest level in decades, posing a grave danger to our national security,” said Rep. Murphy. “Republicans are committed to reversing this treacherous course by preventing the Secretary of Energy from tapping the SPR for non-emergency purposes until a plan to increase oil and gas production is in place. Rest assured, this bill will not result in any offshore drilling along our beautiful North Carolina coast, but will instead bolster our emergency energy supply,” Rep. Murphy continued. “The days of Democrat attacks on American energy are over. Under the new Republican majority, we will continue passing commonsense legislation to restore our energy independence and lower gas prices for every American.

BACKGROUND

The Strategic Production Response Act (H.R. 21) was introduced by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) to limit the drawdown of petroleum in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve until the Department of Energy develops a plan to increase the percentage of federal lands leased for oil and gas production.
