WASHINGTON — U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., announced today that she has been reappointed to the Board of Visitors of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Murphy was selected to serve in this role by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and will help oversee morale and discipline, curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, and other academy matters. During her first term in office, Murphy became the first Florida congresswoman ever appointed to the board, and she is the only Member of Congress from Florida currently serving on the board.
“West Point is renowned for ensuring every cadet receives strong discipline, invaluable leadership skills, and a world-class education,” said Murphy, a former national security specialist at the U.S. Department of Defense. “It is a privilege to once again have a role in helping develop future leaders of character. I look forward to working with my fellow board members to preserve the academy’s standard of excellence and to help guide their future planning in this rapidly-changing global environment.”
The other members of the Board of Visitors are U.S. Senators Richard Burr, R-N.C., Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., Jerry Moran, R-Kan., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., along with U.S. Representatives Mike Conaway, R-Texas, Anthony Brindisi, D-N.Y., Warren Davidson, R-Ohio., and Steve Womack, R-Ark.
There are five U.S. service academies in the United States. In addition to West Point, the other service academies are the Air Force Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, and the Naval Academy. These institutions rank among the most competitive universities in the world, preparing young men and women to commission as an officer. A student seeking to attend one of the service academies, with the exception of the Coast Guard Academy, must obtain a nomination from a Member of Congress or other authorized nominating source.
The deadline for nomination applications for the graduating class of 2024 is September 13, 2019. For more information on the nomination process, please visit murphy.house.gov.
