WASHINGTON—U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., who has led the bipartisan effort in the U.S. House of Representatives to expand the employee retention tax credit (ERTC), issued the following statement after the release by Senate Republicans of their version of the next COVID-19 response bill:

“Although the Senate Republican bill took far too long to craft, and has numerous problems, one bright spot is the inclusion of the expanded ERTC. Like the bipartisan bill I introduced and the House passed, the Senate Republican proposal dials up this pro-worker, pro-business credit in important ways. It also allows businesses to claim the credit even if they receive a loan through the Paycheck Protection Program. This is a major step forward. Now that House-Senate negotiations will hopefully begin in earnest, I think we are in a very strong position to deliver an expansion of the ERTC that is even closer to the House-passed bill, which would help over six million businesses keep nearly 60 million workers tethered to their jobs and their employer-sponsored health coverage. I will continue to work in a bipartisan way to get the job done.”
