WASHINGTON— Members of the Blue Dog Coalition reelected U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., as their leader for the 117th Congress. The 18-member coalition unanimously chose Murphy, a former businesswoman and national security specialist at the U.S. Department of Defense, to serve as Co-Chair of Administration, their most senior leadership position. Murphy made history last Congress as the first woman of color ever to lead the Blue Dog Coalition, and she is only the second leader in the coalition’s history to serve consecutive terms. House Blue Dogs have a longstanding policy focus of fiscal responsibility, a strong national defense, and a pragmatic approach to governance.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to again lead this principled and pragmatic group of House Democrats,” said Murphy. “As our government navigates this unprecedented health and economic crisis, Blue Dogs will continue to reach across the aisle to find common ground and improve the lives of Americans. In this new Congress, our coalition remains committed to pursuing bipartisan cooperation, being fiscally responsible, and protecting our national security. We look forward to being constructive allies in the fight to secure our children’s future and ensure our country emerges from this moment stronger than before.”
Murphy will lead the Blue Dog Coalition alongside Congressmen Ed Case, D-Hawaii, and Tom O’Halleran, D-Ariz., who were elected Co-Chair of Policy and Co-Chair of Communications, respectively.
In the 117th Congress, Murphy will continue as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over issues that directly affect the people of Central Florida, including revenue, critical federal programs like Medicare and Social Security, and trade.
For the next two years, Murphy will also serve as a Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Majority. In this role, Murphy will assist in helping Democrats better communicate with House leadership so that legislation that comes to the House floor reflects the views of the entire Democratic caucus. As Chief Deputy Whip, Murphy also has a seat on the powerful House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, which recommends committee assignments to the Democratic Caucus and helps shape the House policy agenda.
