U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration has awarded a $1.84 million grant to improve safety for SunRail and Amtrak passengers along 110 miles of the Central Florida Rail Corridor in the Orlando region.
Specifically, the federal funding will be used by the Florida Department of Transportation to implement a safety system known as the Interoperable Electronic Train Management System (I-ETMS). Because commuter rail, intercity rail, and freight rail all use the Central Florida Rail Corridor, I-ETMS will help reduce potential collisions between passenger and freight trains.
“I’m pleased the federal government has allocated $1.84 million to improve safety for millions of railroad passengers and workers in central Florida,” said Murphy. “Our region is home to many high-profile destinations, which is why we need a world-class transportation infrastructure network that is safe and reliable. In Congress, I’m working in a bipartisan way to secure federal transportation investments that ease congestion and help our region grow.”
Earlier this month, Rep. Murphy announced that Congress approved $16.06 million to complete SunRail Phase 2 South, which will link Sand Lake Road in Orange County to Poinciana in Osceola County. In March, Rep. Murphy, along with Reps. Darren Soto and Val Demings, sent a letter urging the Trump administration to invest in transportation infrastructure projects in central Florida and throughout the country.
