U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy from Winter Park, Fla., issued the following statement on the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement:
“Addressing climate change and promoting clean, renewable energy is good for Floridians and the economy. That’s why I—along with Republicans, Democrats, businesses and environmental groups—oppose the president’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. The United States should not only be a part of any international discussion on the environment, it should be a leader. Despite the president’s decision, I will continue working with Republicans and Democrats to find clean energy solutions that create jobs, preserve our natural resources and protect clean air and water for our families.”
When it was first signed in 2016, the Paris agreement was considered a global environmental milestone. It was signed by 195 countries and ratified by 147. The United States now joins Syria and Nicaragua as the only three nations to reject the agreement.
Since joining Congress, Rep. Murphy has worked to protect Florida’s natural resources and coastal communities. She helped introduce the Climate Act, which would nullify an executive order issued by President Trump that rolls back environmental safeguards. She also helped introduce the Florida Coastal Protection Act, which would help protect Florida’s beaches by permanently prohibiting oil drilling off the Gulf Coast and the Straits of Florida.
