Rep. Stephanie Murphy Sworn In As Member of 116th Congress
U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., began her second term in the U.S House of Representatives today when she was sworn in as a Member of the 116th Congress by newly-elected House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Two years ago, Murphy became the first Vietnamese-American woman to serve in Congress and the first woman ever to represent Florida’s Seventh Congressional District. Murphy took her second oath of office today on the floor of the House accompanied by her two young children.
“I began my first term in 2017 by hosting listening sessions throughout central Florida because my job is and always will be to listen to the people I represent and to be their voice in our nation’s capital. As I begin my second term today, I’ll keep listening to my constituents and focusing on jobs, security, and opportunity for all Americans,” said Murphy. “I will find common ground when possible, and I will fight misguided policies when necessary. And I will always put people over partisan politics. As we enter a divided Congress, this bipartisan approach will be more important than ever.”
During her first term in Congress, Murphy was named the most effective member of the freshman class and one of the most independent members of Congress. She will now serve in key leadership roles in the next two years. In December 2018, Murphy was elected to lead to the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of 24 pragmatic Democrats focused on fiscal responsibility and a strong national defense. She was also elected Chair of Future Forum, an influential group of young House Democrats who advocate for issues and opportunities important to younger Americans.
Murphy’s bipartisan approach to legislating achieved positive results during her first term in Congress. During that time, 19 Murphy-led measures became law and eight additional measures passed the House. To learn more about Murphy’s accomplishments, click here.
