Murphy Leads on Three Healthcare Initiatives
Washington, D.C. – This week, Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) led on three separate healthcare initiatives, aimed at improving the lives of millions of Americans. Through a combination of advocacy and legislation, Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. is working to support the epilepsy community, strengthen prostate cancer treatment, and improve screening for deadly diseases.
Co-founding the Epilepsy Caucus
Rep. Murphy, along with Rep. Jim Costa (CA-21), created the bipartisan Congressional Epilepsy Caucus, which will bring together Members of Congress and experts to raise awareness about epilepsy and implement meaningful policies. This effort will give those suffering from epilepsy a needed voice in Congress and the nation’s capital.
“The millions of Americans suffering from epilepsy should have a seat at the table,” said Rep. Murphy. “As the Co-Chair and co-founder of the bipartisan Epilepsy Caucus, it is my desire to empower the epilepsy community, one whose voice is long-overdue in Washington, to raise much-needed education and awareness. As a practicing physician of over 30 years, I am committed to heightening education of this very common but often stigmatized malady.”
“It’s critical that those who suffer from epilepsy and seizures have a voice in Congress that advocates for their needs and funding for epilepsy research,” said Rep. Costa. “I’m proud to launch the Congressional Epilepsy Caucus to help implement transformative policies, secure funding for research, and raise awareness about issues affecting the epilepsy community.”
Prostate Cancer Community Assistance, Research and Education (PC-CARE) Act
Rep. Murphy introduced the Prostate Cancer Community Assistance, Research and Education (PC-CARE) Act, which would establish a Prostate Cancer Coordinating Committee to monitor, coordinate, and evaluate the activities of Federal prostate cancer research programs.
“Right now, prostate cancer affects more than 3 million men in America,” said Rep. Murphy. “And while many of our federal agencies work on prostate cancer-related initiatives, there is no formal mechanism to bring these agencies together to best support this growing community. The PC-CARE Act creates much-needed coordination between federal agencies to ensure the prostate cancer community is equipped with the best research and treatment.”
Rep. Murphy previously introduced the PC-CARE Act in the 117th Congress. A link to the bill can be found here.
Facilitating Innovative Nuclear Diagnostics (FIND) Act
Rep. Murphy, along with Reps. Dunn, Peters, and Sewell, introduced the Facilitating Innovative Nuclear Diagnostics (FIND) Act, which is a bipartisan, budget-neutral bill that would protect Medicare beneficiaries’ access to advanced diagnostic imaging procedures that identify dangerous conditions, including heart disease, neurologic disorders, and cancers, in early stages.
“As a practicing surgeon, I know first-hand how essential accurate testing and imaging diagnostics are, not only when screening for disease but also for evaluating treatment efficiency or monitoring disease progression,” said Rep Greg Murphy. “By appropriately paying for newer radiopharmaceuticals, the FIND Act improves access to advanced technology by more closely aligning reimbursement with procedure cost.”
Rep. Murphy previously helped introduce the FIND Act in the 117th Congress. A link to the bill can be found here.
