Public Disclosure Of FY24 Community Project Funding Requests

Project Name: Oregon Inlet Dual Jetty Feasibility Study

Requested Amount: $500,000

Requesting Entity: Dare County, N.C.

Location: Oregon Inlet, N.C.

Justification: Oregon Inlet is the primary route to the ocean for hundreds of vessels. However, the inlet experiences more high winds, strong tides, and shifting sand than any other major commercial inlet in the U.S. The funding would be used for the Oregon Inlet Dual Jetty Feasibility Study to address the problems caused by these severe conditions and save lives and property. This project is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because the dual jetty system has been needed for decades to consistently keep Oregon Inlet open.

Federal Nexus: The funding provided is for purposes authorized by section 101 of the River and Harbor Act of 1970 (Public Law 91-611) and section 8201 Feasibility Study (a), page 1354, Oregon Inlet project for navigation, of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023 (Public Law 117-263).
