Murphy Statement on Fall of Afghanistan Amid Failed Biden Withdrawal

August 15, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Greg Murphy (NC-03) issued the following statement in response to the ongoing situation in Afghanistan:

"The situation in Afghanistan is deeply emotional for the thousands of veterans who have put their lives on the line to serve our country in Afghanistan over the last 20 years," said Murphy. "Tragically, our nation has lost thousands of American heroes who have given their lives in defense of our freedoms.

I am proud to represent over 89,000 veterans who have demonstrated exceptional valor, selflessness, and fundamental strength of character in their voluntary service to our nation.

It is far past time to bring our troops home from the war in Afghanistan. However, the Biden Administration's haphazard withdrawal this week demonstrates a catastrophic failure that will have consequences for years to come. There was a planned strategic withdrawal, but Biden chose a quick ‘dash for the door' and that has led to chaos and unchallenged horror and destruction.

Biden's mishandling of the crisis in Afghanistan is an embarrassment to this nation, as he is not only leaving allies behind and weaking our global stance, but he is also putting thousands of American and Afghan lives in danger. Thousands of Afghans have already been slaughtered as part of the Taliban's advance, with many more at risk because of this unmitigated foreign affairs disaster.

What we are seeing today is nothing short of a tragedy, and the worst part is that it was completely avoidable. President Biden's failure to anticipate the Taliban's rapid takeover in Afghanistan and sudden and irresponsible withdrawal of American support is an unprecedented disaster. In pulling American stability in the region with no strategy in place, Biden has handed control of Afghanistan to the Taliban, and put Americans in harm's way.

This President bears responsibility for the crisis in Afghanistan, and I urge him to address the nation immediately. The American people and our allies deserve answers and a plan for immediate corrective action before more lives are needlessly lost."
