FEMA Awards Onslow County $7.9 Million, Hyde County $2.8 Million
Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, July 28, 2020, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced the Onslow Board of Education will receive $7,919,586.40 in federal funds as a reimbursement for emergency repairs at 38 schools needed because of damage caused by Hurricane Florence. The state of North Carolina will also provide Onslow County $2,639,862.10 for the schools' repairs.
"Like so many other places and institutions in eastern North Carolina, Onslow County schools took a beating during Hurricane Florence. I am pleased this much-needed funding will reimburse Onslow County for the considerable amount of money they had to spend in order to repair their schools so students could come back to school safely in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence," said Murphy.
In addition, FEMA also announced $2,804,712.98 in federal funding will be provided to reimburse Hyde County for debris removal costs incurred after Hurricane Dorian. North Carolina will also contribute $934,904.32 for the same purpose.
"As the representative of the congressional district with the second largest coastline in the continental U.S., coastal management has and will continue to be a top priority of mine. The damage caused by Hurricane Dorian was truly devastating, particularly on Ocracoke Island. I thank FEMA for providing this financial relief to Hyde County," said Murphy.
