Murphy Applauds New Outer Banks Beach Restoration Project
Greenville, N.C. — Today, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced that they will be granting Dare County access to up to 6.6 million cubic yards of sand from the Outer Continental Shelf to restore 11.6 miles of beaches on the Outer Banks. The project is part of Dare County's long-term shoreline management plan to address shoreline erosion, protect local infrastructure, strengthen storm recovery, and provide recreational resources for tourism.
Rep. Murphy released this statement following the announcement:
"I am so glad that Dare County will be receiving the necessary resources to restore our beautiful beaches in the Outer Banks," said Rep. Murphy. "This project will go a long way in protecting and sustaining our habitats, shores, and coastal communities that are beloved by locals and tourists alike. Investing in beach restoration will drive our economy and help make our coastline more resilient against hazardous weather. As a Member of Congress, I am deeply committed to working with state and local leaders, academic experts, and private partners to generate waterway management solutions for Eastern North Carolina, and I am proud to see this meaningful local investment today which will be a key factor in shoreline resilience for years to come."
