Murphy Applauds Passage of SAVE Act to Ensure Only American Citizens Vote in Federal Elections
Washington, D.C. — Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D., applauds the passage of H.R. 22, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, legislation critical to the security and integrity of U.S. federal elections.
"Free and fair elections are fundamental to American democracy," said Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. "Unfortunately, some local jurisdictions have allowed noncitizens to vote in their elections. This undermines the voices of American citizens and opens the door to foreign interference. As a member of the House Administration Committee, I have examined this issue closely, and the evidence is clear - noncitizen voting occurs at levels that can impact elections. The SAVE Act reinforces existing laws, requires proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration in federal elections, and ensures that states remove noncitizens from their voter rolls."
Background The SAVE Act requires states to obtain proof of citizenship before registering an individual to vote in an election. Additionally, it requires states to remove noncitizens from existing voter rolls while giving them the necessary tools to do so. |
