Murphy Applauds Passage of SAVE Act to Prevent Noncitizens from Voting in Federal Elections
Washington, D.C. — Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. issued the following statement in response to the passage of H.R. 8281, the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, to require individuals to provide proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
"Ensuring that American voices are heard through free and fair elections is the cornerstone of our democracy,” said Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. “Across the country, local jurisdictions have allowed noncitizens to vote in their elections, and worse yet, promoted opportunities to vote in federal elections. Not only does allowing noncitizens to vote disenfranchise Americans, but it also invites direct foreign interference in our elections."
"As a member of the Committee on House Administration, we have held 12 hearings on this issue. The data clearly shows that noncitizens vote, do so in large enough quantities to influence elections, and have their votes counted. The SAVE Act restores confidence in our elections by strengthening existing laws, requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, and mandating states remove non-citizens from their voter rolls." |
