Murphy Encourages Constituents to Apply for Service Academy Nominations

June 24, 2020

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) is encouraging young men and women in eastern North Carolina to submit their applications for nominations to U.S. service academies. In most cases, the United States Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Merchant Marine Academy all require a nomination from a member of Congress. The Coast Guard Academy does not require a nomination. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply to more than one service academy.

Murphy may nominate up to ten candidates per vacant academy slot allotted to the Third Congressional District of North Carolina. After a candidate is nominated, it is up to each academy to offer admission. Not all candidates who are nominated will receive an appointment. Prospective applicants can learn more by visiting Murphy's website here. The deadline to apply is October 1, 2020.

"It is my hope that many of the young men and women of eastern North Carolina will answer the high call of duty and apply to at least one of America's prestigious military academies. I have assembled a highly qualified Nominating Committee who blindly review each application and rank each candidate to assure the process is a fair and equitable one. The Third District of North Carolina has always been well-represented at U.S. Service Academies and we want to continue that proud tradition," said Murphy.
