Murphy Mourns the Loss of Congressman John Lewis
Greenville, N.C. – Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) issued the following statement after the passing of Congressman John Lewis (GA- 05) late last night on July 17, 2020.
"I join today with so many Americans in mourning the death of a great American and fellow Congressman John Lewis. From his unique role in the March on Washington at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, to serving his constituents in the House of Representatives for 33 years, Congressman John Lewis fought for civil rights for African Americans throughout his entire life," said Murphy. "Like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis masterfully utilized the tactic of peaceful protest to combat injustice. We indeed still face racial challenges in this nation but his approach of peaceful and respectful disobedience led so many to search their souls and change their hearts. His contributions to the progress of civil liberties in this country cannot be emphasized enough. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones as they mourn alongside all Americans the end of his final battle, this time with cancer. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy will always be remembered."
