Murphy Opposes Democrats’ Latest Partisan Shell Game
Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) released the following statement regarding House Democrats' decision to tie a bipartisan solution relieving providers from Medicare cuts to a debt limit increase.
"Up until yesterday, Congress had worked out a good-faith bipartisan compromise on a legislative proposal to shield physicians and providers from disastrous Medicare reimbursement cuts," said Rep. Murphy. "However, at the 11th hour, the Majority elected to forfeit our bipartisan agreement and hold it hostage in order to clear a path for their debt limit increase, which House Republicans have clearly and consistently opposed for months. I refuse to help the Majority fuel their never-ending spending spree at the expense of the American people. To be clear, protecting patients' access to care and supporting health care providers should not be a partisan game contingent on a debt limit vote – it's a serious issue that deserves our full attention. Pending physician reimbursement cuts should not be used as a partisan weapon for the Majority to get what they want out of a debt limit increase. I fervently support our providers, but I cannot support tonight's gimmicky, bad-faith Democratic shell game."
Republican solution: Rep. Murphy has co-sponsored the Removing Waste and Protecting Medicare Act sponsored by Rep. Jason Smith (MO-08). This bill includes the original bipartisan "doc fix" and fulfills Statutory PAYGO law to support physicians and providers while protecting seniors and vulnerable populations.
