Murphy Pressures IRS Commissioner Rettig on Agency Inefficiency, Tax Return Backlog
Washington, D.C. – This morning, Rep. Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) participated in a Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee hearing with IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig regarding the 2022 Tax Filing Season. In his remarks, Rep. Murphy questioned Commissioner Retting about the tremendous backlog in unprocessed business and individual IRS returns and scrutinized the IRS for their inefficiency. Rep. Murphy concluded that the IRS can and should do better by the American people, and that the federal government has a responsibility to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars.

Background: As of March 8th, 2022, the IRS had 10.6 million unprocessed business and individual returns and 3.2 million unprocessed amended returns. Additionally, the agency had 6.6 million returns that were flagged during the IRS' return review process and require further action. In total, more than 20 million returns are languishing in the backlog, some dating back to April 2021.
