Murphy Supports Governor Cooper Request to Declare Emergency for North Carolina as Tropical Storm Isaias Approaches

August 1, 2020

Greenville, N.C. – On Saturday, August 1, 2020, Governor Roy Cooper requested President Donald Trump to declare an emergency for the State of North Carolina as Tropical Storm Isaias approaches.

Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) issued the following statement after sending a letter in support of Governor Cooper's request:

"Eastern North Carolinians are no strangers to the danger that tropical storms and hurricanes can present our coastal municipalities. Governor Cooper petitioned the president to declare an emergency for the State of North Carolina as Tropical Storm Isaias approaches the coast. This evening, I sent a letter to President Trump in support of Governor Cooper's request. These are times when we, regardless of political party, come together to care for our neighbors and our communities," said Murphy.

The text of the letter can be found below:

Dear Mr. President:

As you know, Tropical Storm Isaias is bearing down on the east coast of the United States and the National Weather Service is projecting a significant impact for the State of North Carolina.

Yesterday, Governor Roy Cooper requested that you declare an emergency for the State of North Carolina under the provisions of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief Assistance Act.

I write to add a second voice to that request and respectfully request that you declare an emergency for the State of North Carolina.

It was just less than a year ago that many residents of eastern North Carolina were dealing with Dorian. Some are still recovering, and so this request for Federal assistance will give the residents of North Carolina the added resources we will need to recover from this storm.

Many thanks for your consideration of this request.
