Murphy Visits Sturgeon City in Jacksonville

July 16, 2020

Jacksonville, N.C. – Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) was in Jacksonville on July 16, 2020 visiting Sturgeon City – an environmental education center in the area that teaches youth how to be good stewards of the New River and coastal wetlands in eastern North Carolina. The staff put on a presentation for Murphy about the work they do at the education center.

Murphy released the following statement after the visit.

"Coastal North Carolina is among the most beautiful places in the world. Sturgeon City is a true community success story. We are all called to be good stewards of the beautiful land and seascapes that we have been blessed with here in eastern North Carolina," said Murphy. "Some twenty years ago the community identified a polluted river and then they set about a plan to clean it up. They enlisted all members of the community, especially the young, to put forth a plan of corrective action, then executed it to perfection. Sturgeon City provides an essential service to the young here in Onslow County by teaching them how to care for their environment from a young age. Over 70,000 visitors last year alone. It was a pleasure learning more about the many things they do to keep the New River and coastal wetlands clean."
