Murphy Votes Against H.R. 7

April 15, 2021

Washington, D.C. – On Thursday, April 15, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 7. Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) released the following statement after voting against the legislation.

"Republicans believe that pay discrimination in the workplace based on sex, race, nationality or religion should not be tolerated, which is why we support upholding and enforcing the Civil Rights Act," said Murphy. "Despite what Democrats would have you believe, H.R. 7 offers no new protections against pay discrimination for women.

"The so-called Paycheck Fairness Act is yet another social justice trojan horse intended to line the pockets of trial lawyers who profit from frivolous lawsuits. This legislation would make it nearly impossible for small business owners to defend against equal pay lawsuits even when wage differences are the result of legitimate factors other than sex.

"Particularly as we near the end of this pandemic, we should be empowering job creators rather than punishing them. I simply cannot support such legislation that seeks to punish small businesses – which are the backbone of our economy – for acting in good faith. I regret this bill's passage through the House."
