Surf City Awarded $8 Million to Aid Ongoing Emergency Berm Installation Efforts
Surf City, N.C. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that Surf City will receive $7,983,187 to relieve emergency costs taken on due to Hurricane Florence. Florence subjected the coastline near the city to extensive erosion and Surf City was forced to install emergency berms to prevent future storms from harming property along the coastline. Before the installation, reports showed that they would have been vulnerable to a five-year flood event.
Installing the berms required 105,546 cubic yards of sand and an additional 70,641 will be brought in to complete the project. Funds from this grant will reimburse the $7,759,997 already spent on the project and will cover some of the $2,884,272 needed to bring the project to completion.
Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) issued the following statement in response:
"Thanks to the swift actions of Surf City, the problems caused by Hurricane Florence weren't made worse by smaller, subsequent storms," said Murphy. "I'm glad to see those actions are being rewarded and that they are receiving the funds they deserve."
